Coming from someone who has maybe paid for a gym membership for 1 month of her 24 years of living, I can certainly attest to being lazy when it comes to working out. I do understand that it is very important to stay fit and healthy, so I try to find other ways to keep myself in shape. You probably won’t ever find me on the elliptical and I’ll never be apart of team#fitfam, but I can give you some advice on how I stay (somewhat) fit.
1. Walk, walk, walk.
Here in NYC, we are in some ways lucky that walking is one of the most simple forms of transportation. If the temperatures aren’t too extreme and I leave myself ample time, I will always choose to walk to my destination- uptown to downtown, east to west… get those legs moving! Even taking a stroll with a friend… it’s truly nice to get lost around this city. You’re burning more calories than you think.
2. Make it a social thing.
I’ll gladly take a class with friends! There are so many options when it comes to classes and they are always great to do with a companion. One that I’d highly recommend would be 305 Fitness — you will certainly get in a fantastic work out while dancing around to really fun music. If you grab a few of your friends and do a class, it literally feels like a party!
3. Set reasonable goals.
The keyword here is reasonable!! I don’t like when my friends go on these crazy crash diets and don’t eat anything solid for 5 days or constantly talk about how they’re always working out. It’s not a healthy way to live your life. A reasonable goal would be something like “fit into my skinny jeans by the end of the month” — this I could work with. Moderation is key.
4. Stay focused.
In the rare times that I am doing some sort of workout, I find that I get distracted a lot. The best way to avoid this is to put down your electronics and connect your brain to your body. Music is fine, but there’s really no need to be texting on your phone while you’re working out. If I’m doing my (very ambitious) 15 minutes a day of a few circuits, I will put everything else aside. You’re doing this for a reason, so make it worth it! Focus!
5. Eat right.
If you are not working out too often, it’s especially important to keep your diet healthy. Make sure you have protein, vegetables, and a lot of nutrients. Try to stay away from the takeout and the fast food and lean more towards home cooked meals. Doing this alone will help you stay in better shape!
6. Do something that you enjoy.
I don’t mean to be such a hater when it comes to the gym, but I really will never understand how someone can enjoy being on a stair master for one hour. Like I mentioned, there are a ton of classes offered whether it’s kickboxing or yoga or maybe even just a ballet class. It doesn’t even end there- I sometimes consider my Saturday nights on the dance floor as my work out for the day. Now that’s certainly breaking a sweat while having a good time.
